Vehicle Speed Trial
ImageA Mobile Speed Indicator Device was hired from Kingsland Parish Council for a trial period of 17 days from 29th March to 14th April 2008. This device, in addition to flashing up a vehicle’s speed, has the ability to record approach speed, passing speed, date, time and a vehicle count. It may be set to register at all speeds or only those above a preset limit.
The purpose of the trial was to see whether we have a real speeding problem in the village, if so, at which locations and whether such a device could be of value in reducing any such problem.

The equipment was set up at various positions around the village as follows:

1) 29th, 30th, 31st Mar. On the corner of the village centre green triangle –
facing incoming traffic on the SW approach from the by-pass.

2) 2nd, 3rd, 4th Apr. On the corner of the village centre green triangle –
facing incoming traffic from Weobley/Stretford on the E approach.

3) 5th, 6th, 7th Apr. On the N approach from the by-pass by the
playing field gate – facing incoming traffic.

4) 8th, 9th Apr. On the N approach from the by-pass by Turvey Cottage
– alternately facing incoming and outgoing traffic.

5) 10th Apr. On the SW approach from the by-pass by the field
gate opposite Henwood Close – facing incoming traffic.

6) 10th, 11th Apr. On the Dilwyn Common road by Venmore Cottage -
alternately facing incoming and outgoing traffic.

The first position was used simply for familiarisation with the equipment and optimisation of the settings and no useful data were obtained.
For the remainder of the trial period the equipment was set to record only those speeds in excess of the statutory 30mph limit.
The results are presented in the table below as the percentage of the total number of speed limit violations over the effective trial period (13 days) occurring in 5mph speed bands in each of the locations. They may be summarised
as follows:
  • Over the 13 day period there were 921 recorded instances of speeds in excess
  • of the statutory 30 mph limit.
  • Of these, 61% were within the band 31 - 35 mph and 28% within the band 36 - 40 mph.
  • The highest recorded speed was 52 mph (2 instances in the same general area).
  • The largest number of recorded instances - 63% - was on the N approach between the under-pass and the school (both directions).
